W.E.B Realizes the Value of the Ariano Wind Park and Reinvests in New Wind and Solar Projects
07/2026 - Back to overview
WEB Windenergy AG (W.E.B) has sold its Ariano wind farm in Italy to Enel. Commissioned in June 2024, the wind farm consists of 20 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 84 MW. The transaction enables W.E.B to capitalize on favorable market conditions in Italy. The proceeds will be reinvested in expanding the company's international development pipeline, including three wind projects in Lower Austria's Weinviertel region with a combined capacity of 143 MW, the 112 MW Sugar Maple wind farm in Canada, and the Rašnice and Břežany wind farms in the Czech Republic with a combined capacity of 64 MW.
Italian Power Market Conditions
The decision to sell was driven by the unique characteristics of Italy's electricity market. W.E.B had originally planned to operate both the Ariano wind park and the 12 MW Apricena wind park under a government-supported incentive scheme that provides stable revenues while limiting the opportunity to benefit from higher market prices. Selling electricity directly into the market offers greater revenue potential but also exposes projects to significantly higher price volatility.
For the Apricena wind park, W.E.B is preparing to transition out of the incentive scheme. "For Ariano, moving to a merchant market model would have resulted in substantial unhedged revenue exposure. Large market participants can manage this market risk differently because of the size and diversification of their portfolios, allowing them to assign a higher value to the project. Through our active portfolio management approach, we strategically seized this opportunity to sell the project," said Roman Prager, Chief Operating Officer of WEB Windenergy AG.
A High-Performing Project
The sale followed a broad and competitive sales process that attracted approximately 30 interested parties during the bidding phases. The purchase price of approximately EUR 145 million, representing the enterprise value of the project company at closing, underscores the project's strong economic performance. In addition, W.E.B may receive up to EUR 12.4 million through future milestone payments.
Since entering commercial operation in June 2024, Ariano has consistently delivered strong operating results. The transaction is expected to have a positive impact on W.E.B's financial results for the third quarter.
Developing and Operating Renewable Energy Assets Remains W.E.B's Core Business
"Our core business remains the development, construction, and long-term operation of our own renewable energy assets," said Michael Trcka, Chief Financial Officer of WEB Windenergy AG. "We only sell projects in selected cases when doing so is strategically beneficial, aligns with our existing partnerships, and enables us to invest in the next generation of renewable energy assets."
Across its eight markets, W.E.B's development pipeline currently totals approximately 4,000 MW. The company also continues to expand its presence in Italy, where its development pipeline exceeds 700 MW across projects at various stages of development. W.E.B will continue to advance these projects while focusing on investments that offer stable and predictable long-term returns.
