Electricity Provider Check: W.E.B Among Austria’s Leading Pioneers
01/2026 - Back to overview
The latest electricity provider check conducted by WWF and GLOBAL 2000 confirms our strategic direction: W.E.B ranked second in the category “Drivers of the Electricity Future (this is the best possible category to be ranked in),” once again placing us among Austria’s top-rated energy providers.
This result underscores our commitment to developing renewable energy consistently, transparently, and responsibly – for the benefit of our customers and a sustainable energy future alike.
Energy Transition Progress Remains Slow
The electricity provider check clearly shows that the energy transition is progressing only slowly among many Austrian electricity suppliers. Out of 129 companies analyzed, only three were recognized as “Drivers of the Electricity Future.” This makes W.E.B’s strong position within this top group all the more encouraging.
Only nine providers achieved the status of “solid green electricity providers.” The majority, however, received average to poor ratings. The environmental organizations were particularly critical of the lack of transparency: 84 electricity providers refused to provide information and could therefore be assessed solely on the basis of publicly available data—including several major regional energy utilities.
Clear Words from the Study Authors
“Surprisingly many electricity providers are poorly positioned for a genuine energy transition. The main shortcomings are related to environmental compatibility and credible strategies for phasing out gas and achieving climate targets,” emphasize the study authors Reinhard Uhrig (WWF) and Maximilian Hejda (GLOBAL 2000).
How the Evaluation Was Conducted
For the electricity provider check, WWF and GLOBAL 2000 sent comprehensive questionnaires to 129 Austrian electricity providers. The assessment covered 16 environmental and social criteria, including:
- Corporate strategy
- Transparency
- Expansion of renewable energy, and
- Environmental compatibility of power plants
Based on the results, providers were assigned to one of six categories, ranging from “Drivers of the Electricity Future” to “Fossil Laggards.”
